Fillings are used to rebuild tooth structure which has been lost either through decay or fracture and to replace defective old fillings. Silver amalgam has been used to restore teeth for about 100 years, but with the advent of tooth coloured composites, fillings can now be created which copy the colour and translucency of the different tooth layers. As composite is bonded to the tooth, the structure of the tooth is stronger and less drilling is required than in a tooth filled with silver amalgam. The use of composite filling material provides durability as well as being virtually indistinguishable from natural tooth.
This also means that when you smile, you only show natural looking teeth and not unsightly mercury fillings.
