Training Ambassadors AwardTraining Ambassadors Award
Eastleigh College Training Ambassadors Award

Barker Dental Care was honoured with a Training Ambassadors Award for employer dedication in staff development by Eastleigh College in April 2009. The award was presented by Chris Huhne, the local Member of Parliament. Our practice was put forward by one of our staff members, Janet Green, who is currently nearing the end of her dental nurse training at Eastleigh College. Of the 50 employers nominated for this award, the Barker Dental Care was one of five businesses recognized at the Eastleigh College Annual Awards banquet. We were very pleased to receive this honour and will continue to support our team in furthering their training and education.

Las Vegas InstituteLas Vegas Institute
In February 2009, Tim attended the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI).  The LVI is known as one of the most advanced cosmetic dentistry schools in the world.  The LVI curriculum is centred around neuromuscular dentistry, which focuses on ensuring that a patient's bite is in the ideal position.   Typically, smile makeovers consist of crowning teeth and/or placing multiple veneers.  However, just placing multiple crowns and veneers on a patient's teeth to create a pretty smile without resolving any underlying problems with the patient's bite can ultimately lead to jaw joint problems, broken veneers, veneers falling off, and teeth becoming mobile (i.e. the dental work failing).  In contrast, the goal of becoming an LVI trained dentist is so that one can not only create a beautiful smile but also create a smile that feels comfortable and that will last.
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation training

Over the past six months, the team at Barker Dental Care have received extensive training on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Medical Emergencies from a certified retired member of the Hampshire Ambulance Service. In addition to the CPR and Medical Emergencies training, we have also received significant training on the safe use of an Automated Electronic Defibrillation (AED) machine.

AED machines have only recently started appearing in public areas such as airports, arenas, and shopping complexes, and currently, business owners are not legally required to have an AED machine on site. Nevertheless, Tim and Amy purchased the AED machine for the practice because they believe that it is vital not simply to have the standard training and equipment should a medical emergency arise but rather to surpass the legal minimum requirements, which in this instance could save the life of one of our patients or team members should they suffer a heart attack on the premises. Studies have shown that the use of an AED machine within the first three minutes on someone experiencing cardiac arrest increases the chances of survival dramatically. The increased survival rate leaves no doubt as to the benefits of having an AED machine on site to use in conjunction with effective CPR. We certainly hope that we never have a medical emergency situation to test our skills, equipment and training in this area, but we, at Barker Dental Care, are doing everything we can to ensure that we are well trained, prepared and equipped should a medical emergency occur at our practice.

Dr. Tim Barker attended the Continuum Level 2 course at The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Key Biscayne, Florida in October 2007.  While in Key Biscayne, Tim took part in an interactive class designed to help dentists learn the most advanced dental techniques.

The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education offers a comprehensive learning experience for dentists and other dental professionals.  Its courses of study are recognized by leading dental associations and attract participants from all over the world who want to provide their patients with top-quality, personalized care.  Its state-of-the-art facility, curriculum, and renowned faculty make The Pankey Institute the premiere post-graduate experience in dentistry.

Practice refurbishment
Since buying the practice in March 2007, Tim and Amy have been hard at work refurbishing the practice.  The newly re-decorated and refurnished waiting area, reception and hallways now have a more up-to-date and modern feel while preserving the friendly atmosphere of an established family practice.

Tim and Amy look forward to making further investment in the practice over the coming months with the aim of continually improving the quality of care that we give to our patients.

Tim and Amy Barker purchased this dental practice on March 1, 2007 from Tim's father, Machen Barker, who has been practicing at 9 Barnes Lane for the past 40 years.  The practice was previously known as Machen Barker & Associates, but with the change of ownership, the practice name has been changed to Barker Dental Care.

Tim and Amy look forward to making improvements in the practice and to moving the practice forward in the constantly evolving world of dentistry.
